CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — In the past few years, there have been several farm accidents and deaths in the Cumberland Valley and across Pennsylvania. The 2024 Farm Fatal Injury Summary notes 19 known agricultural fatalities in Pennsylvania last year, a quarter of which were under the age of 10, while almost half were aged 65 and over. Based on this data, we know that farming can be dangerous, and we ask: How can farmers, farm workers, and their families be safer on the farm?

Penn State Extension wants to help by bringing education about on-farm safety to the community. The whole family is encouraged to attend the program, starting at 9 a.m. and ending at 2 p.m. on July 17th. The venue for the Farm Safety Day is at the Franklin County Fairgrounds, 3725 Warm Spring Road, Chambersburg, Pa.

This is a hands-on educational event and will include demonstrations that highlight safety practices such as pesticide safety, tractor PTO safety, and working with livestock and poultry. Participants will also benefit from sessions on first aid, managing farm-related stress, and a grain bin rescue demonstration conducted by the local fire department.
