HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Center for Dairy Excellence’s “All Things Dairy” monthly conference call aims to provide a platform for organizations and industry partners to share timely updates, resources, programs, and upcoming events relevant to the dairy community. The next call is scheduled for Wednesday, October 8 at 1 p.m. EST.

Speakers from Penn State Extension and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture will provide tips for maintaining average daily gain through the winter months, advice on how to ensure ventilation while controlling moisture, and an update on HPAI and New World Screwworm.

“As we head into the fall and winter months, we thought it was a good time to brush up on best practices for achieving optimal growth of your youngstock during the colder months. Our speakers also plan to share helpful information about controlling moisture and optimizing ventilation along with updates on biosecurity threats. We hope you can join us for our next conference call,” shared Valerie Mason-Faith, risk education manager at the Center for Dairy Excellence.

During the October 8th call, get updates on:

• HPAI and New World Screwworm detections. Dr. Erin Luley from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture will offer updates on biosecurity threats, with a new HPAI detection in dairy cattle in Nebraska and a detection of New World Screwworm 70 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.

• Maintaining average daily gain through the winter months. Jim Lawhead from Penn State Extension will discuss the youngstock of the farm and how to maintain their nutritional requirements – while not compromising growth – through the winter months.

• Ensuring ventilation while controlling moisture. John Tyson from Penn State Extension will discuss controlling moisture in animal housing this winter to avoid respiratory illness in calves, heifers and cows.
