UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State’s Extension Dairy Team is offering a series of in-person workshops to demonstrate the importance of producing milk quality. The cost is $10 per person, and $5 per additional attendee, up to four people, with lunch included.
Attendees will learn to reduce somatic cell counts, use DHIA records to monitor and improve milk quality, how to interpret culture results and collect high-quality samples, and how to apply research findings specifically from Pennsylvania dairy farms.
Upcoming sessions on practical steps to better milk quality are:
• Nov. 14 – Burk-Lea Farms, 3099 Grand Point Road, Chambersburg, Franklin County, 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.
• Nov. 20 – Replogle School Building, 145 Replogle School Road, New Enterprise, Bedford County, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.
• December 10 – Amos Esh Farm, 3736 Newport Road, Gordonville, Lancaster County, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost for this workshop is $15 per person and $10 for each additional registered attendee from the same farm. Lunch is included and registration is requested by December 8.
In addition to learning best milking practices, attendees will learn about on-farm examples of common milk quality problems, culturing techniques to boost herd heath and profitability and how to interpret culture results, and how to effectively analyze DHIA records.
